Fostering

Volunteer foster homes needed

Are you able to provide a short term foster home for a dog?

We are looking for pet free, and mainly child-free homes for the times when we need a dog to be looked after in a home. This can be anything from a few days if they are recovering from surgery to a few weeks until they can be rehomed.

The main reasons for this will be:

  • A dog recovering from surgery that prevents them from having normal exercise, and needing more companionship.

  • A dog that is struggling to adapt to kennel life and may be stressed in kennels.

Fostering is short term, and until the dog is rehomed.

We would prefer our foster homes to look after the dog during its time with us until it is rehomed, but we will of course take a dog back if this is not possible.

We will provide you with the food, treats and toys you need to look after the dog and a full history and assessment of the dog.

You will get to meet the dog and take it for a walk before fostering it to make sure you are happy with it.

Your home

  • You must have a garden that is private and secure to prevent escape and not shared or communal with other residents.

  • Your home may need to be one that has someone home all the time, or at least most of the time.

  • No cages/crates in the home.

  • Experienced with dogs

  • No children under the age of 5 – and most dogs will require no children under higher ages, and this will be mentioned on their online profile

  • No other pets – no dogs, cats, rabbits, birds, etc.

  • The dog must always be walked on a lead, with the appropriate harness at all times.

  • If the dog is required to wear a muzzle in public it must do so at all times.

Things you need to know

When a dog is in your foster care you will need to be able to look after its needs until it comes back into our care – this includes feeding (we provide the food and treats), and exercising in accordance with what that particular dog requires.

If the fostering does not work you can return the dog but you need to be aware that returns can only happen during hours that the kennel is open to the public (7am to 7:30pm) and that under no circumstances can dogs be returned outside of these hours.

We will not know how some dogs behave in the home, but we will make you aware of as much information as we know about a dog.

We will not be responsible for any damage or destruction in your home.

Although you are fostering the dog you will be responsible for its actions while in your care.

What dogs are available to foster?

Not all dogs are available to foster. The only dogs we will be looking to foster will clearly say on their profile page.

What to do next

If you would like to register to foster please email us first at info@happystaffie.co.uk

We may then ask you to complete an online adoption form, don't worry you are not applying to adopt a dog, it is just that the adoption form will ask the same questions we need to register you as a foster home.

Please note images on this page are just illustrative of some of the types of dogs we have had in, and not necessarily dogs currently available. Dogs that may be available for fostering will only be from those that are currently available (including reserved) on our main adopt page. Not all dogs on that page will need fostering, we are only looking to foster dogs that may be recovering from illness or surgery, or that are struggling to adapt to kennel life.
